I am amused and delighted in equal parts by The Vegetable Orchestra of Vienna that makes serious music using vegetables alone. I am listening with fresh ears to the sounds dormant in the contents of my vegetable basket. Perhaps late at night when the house is quiet they strike up their own jam-sessions (with apologies to fruit): carrots beating out the rhythm on the pumpkin drum, the strings of celery played by a snappy green bean, the shredded edge of cabbage providing the tremolato to the high piping carrot flute. I could set up a secret recorder and spy on the secret lives of vegetables, listening in to their midnight music, eavesdropping on their banter…. then again, sometimes it is better to leave these things to the imagination.
